HISTORY LESSON

-

MANCHESTER CITY won the first of their six League Cup titles in 1970 as they came from behind to beat West Brom 2-1 in extra-time.

Mike Doyle levelled after Jeff Astle’s opener for City before Glyn Pardoe got the winner in front of a packed Wembley crowd.

Six years later City had their hands on the trophy again thanks to an overhead kick by Dennis Tueart (above) – who later described the goal as “the greatest moment” of his career.

That 2-1 win over Newcastle ensured City boss Tony Book became the first man to win the competition as both a player and manager.

Fast forward to the modern era of Sheikh Mansour’s billions and City have won the League Cup four times between 2014 and 2019.

The third triumph in their history saw Manuel Pellegrini’s men come from behind to beat Sunderland 3-1.

Yaya Toure fired in an outrageous 30-yard strike to bring the game level in the 55th minute before Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas put the game to bed.

It took penalties for City to overcome Liverpool in 2016.

Fernandinho scored first before Philippe Coutinho’s late leveller but both players went on to miss their penalties in the shootout.

Thankfully for City, Navas, Sergio Aguero and Toure (below) secured the win.

After a year’s gap, City recorded back-to-back League Cup titles under Pep Guardiola.

The first, in 2018, was a 3-0 win over Arsenal with goals from Aguero, Vincent Kompany and David Silva.

The final 12 months later will be remembered for the penalty win over Chelsea when Blues keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refused Maurizio Sarri’s orders to be substituted.

Raheem Sterling scored the decisive penalty.
