Lags get out early
LOWER-risk prisoners nearing the end of their custodial sentences will be considered for early release, amid fears a prison outbreak of coronavirus could overwhelm local hospitals.
Offenders in the last two months of their sentences would be considered for release on temporary licence under emergency powers.
Those freed early could still be recalled. They will have to pass a risk assessment and be subject to electronic monitoring.
The change will not apply to those who have been convicted of violent or sexual offences, or those who are a security concern.
The Government did not want to make the change but was forced to act because of the effect large numbers of hospitalised prisoners might have on health services.
