21c today & summer set to be SCORCHER (WILL WE BE ALLOWED OUT TO ENJOY IT?)

- By ISOBEL DICKINSON

THE nation is set to sizzle to- day on the hottest day so far this year – but Britons have been told to “stay indoors”.

The country has been warned it must not flout strict lockdown laws, despite temperatures higher than in the Mediterranean.

And the heatwave shows no sign of slowing down, with weather experts forecasting one of the warmest summers on record.

They say temperatures could rise to 25C in the coming weeks due to a mass of hot air from Africa and could last for three months. The

Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “It’s a Sunday roast with 21C and, after Monday showers, up to 23C is on the cards on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Warm air is coming all the way from the north-west coast of Africa, with good sunny spells during the next week.”

The untimely heatwave comes as we are urged to continue to stay inside and not visit parks and beaches due to the coronavirus crisis.

Officials warned that the glorious weather was not a valid excuse to leave home ahead of Easter, one of the biggest domestic tourism weekends of the year.

NHS England’s national medical director Dr Steve Powis said: “The sun might be out, but that doesn’t mean you should be out.”

A Met Office forecaster added: “The driest conditions and warmest temperatures ahead are mostly likely in the south, while the north will still be warm.

“Even though the weather is warm, save lives by staying home.”
