Jumbo babies are safe at last

- By

A BABY elephant steps out for another day in the safety of a sanctuary.

It is one of many who have been rescued after being left for dead out in the wild.

Staff at Elephant Havens in Botswana dedicate their lives to the young giants who have been orphaned by poachers or left by their own herds due to ill-health.

Our photo shows the incredible relationship these animal heroes have built with the elephants they hand-rear towards adulthood.

Once the animals are healthy and old enough, they are released into the wild as a herd.

Photographer Martin Harvey, 64, watched as staff at Elephant Havens cared for the world’s largest walking animals after finding them struggling alone and close to death.
