his was a big hey are now with touching distance of another season in the Premier League.

Unlike most of the other games that have come before this one, it started at a decent pace and Bukayo Saka made his intentions clear with an excellent early effort.

He stepped inside and curled a right-foot shot past Ryan but it rattled the crossbar and Brighton got away with that one.

Ryan then made a lovely save to deny Alexandre Lacazette, one of five changes to Arsenal’s starting line-up from midweek, getting down well to keep his header out from Saka’s cross.

Arsenal’s injury problems worsened when Maupay barged into Leno, a challenge he didn’t need to make with the ball comfortably in the keeper’s possession, with Emiliano Martinez brought on to replace him.

And the Argentine immediately saved a fine save from Aaron

Mooy.

At the other end

Ryan produced three saves to keep out PierreEmerick Aubameyang, who wasn’t as lively as that makes him sound, and how important those stops looked when Dunk forced home after Arsenal failed to deal with a corner.

A point would have probably been considered a decent one for Brighton but they didn’t want to settle for one and there was Maupay, on hand at the death, to net a crucial goal in the battle towards

Brighton’s survival.

MIKEL ARTETA blasted his Arsenal stars for not competing as they crashed 2-1 at Brighton.

The Spanish boss was furious they surrendered a 68th-minute lead after a super strike from £72million winger Pepe.

Brighton skipper Lewis Dunk bundled home a close-range equaliser before arch-villain Neal Maupay bagged an injury-time winner to ease the Seagulls’ relegation worries.

It was Arsenal’s second defeat in four days and Arteta was angry that his stars hadn’t shown more steel and focus.

He said: “After a defeat you want to get the next win straight away and I think we did a lot of things to win the game comfortably.

“But we haven’t competed and you have to do that in the Premier league. We lost important duels so it’s all our fault.

“I don’t have concerns about their character – it’s about how you compete.

“It’s for 100 minutes in this case, it’s for every ball and for every action. When you lose attention the opponent will punish you and it’s not the first time it has happened.

“The players competed for large parts of game but in crucial moments when you don’t you pay attention you pay the price and that’s my fault obviously because I have to make sure they do.”

Brighton boss Graham Potter was delighted as his side picked up their first league win of 2020.

He said: “It’s a massive win for us. To go a goal down and to still come away with three points is huge, especially with no supporters here, and you have to find the answers from within.

“I’m so proud of the players, it’s been a long time coming. The margins haven’t been with us but it was important we showed we are here to fight.

“We are going to give everything.”
