Tregoning enjoys some welcome Summer fun

- By CHRIS GOULDING

DERBY-WINNING trainer Marcus Tregoning returned from the wilderness after Mohaather cruised to victory in the Group Two Betfred Summer Mile at Ascot.

Tregoning, successful in the 2006 Derby with Sir Percy, showed that given the bullets he can hit the target after Mohaather made amends for his unfortunate run at Royal Ascot.

Unlike his previous visit to the Berkshire track when he suffered more traffic problems than are encountered on the M25, the classy Mohaather was presented with a clear highway.

“He’s always looked like he could be a very good horse,” said Tregoning after Dane O’Neill partnered Hamdan Al Maktoum’s colt to victory.

“He’s probably the best miler I’ve had and it is very exciting. He got the trip well. He’s been working extremely well at home, so I was hoping he’d deliver.

“I was quite keen that it wasn’t too soft as he’s got electric speed.”

Last year’s French 2000 Guineas third San Donato ran a cracker on his first appearance of the season to take second with Duke Of Hazzard back in third place.

The Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood now beckons for Mohaather.

O’Neill, understudy to Jim Crowley for the Hamdan Al Maktoum runners, clearly played the leading role yesterday as he was earlier on the mark with the William Haggastrained Manaabit who also carried the Maktoum silks.

O’Neill was completing a double having struck on William Haggas’ Manaabit (17-2) in the Betfred ‘Ascot Official Bookmaker’ Fillies’ Handicap.

MILE’S BETTER: Mohaather
