BRIDGE BUILDING: Frank Lampard

CHELSEA are on the right track with Frank Lampard steering the ship, says Scott Minto. The Blues came fourth in his first full season in charge and put in some impressive performances as Lampard looked to blood a youthful squad. Minto – who played 54 times for the club from 1994 to 1997 before a move to Benfica – feels Chelsea are a work in progress. But the former left-back is convinced Lampard has got what it takes to bring the glory days back to Stamford Bridge. He said: “The fans will always be grateful for what Roman Abramovich has done but they are desperate for someone that they can cling on to as a manager – someone who is a Chelsea person and can be there for the next four or five years.

Lampard and his No.2 Jody Morris tick every box in that respect.

“They know what they need to do to take that next step, although anyone who thinks that they can challenge for the ettet title this s season is being ng a little bit naive. ve.

What Lampard d a nd Mor r i s have is football and emotional intelligence.

“The dressing room is going to o r e s p e c t wh a at t they’ve both done ne as players – but that will only get you so far.

“You’ve got to also have that tactical awareness. Players always look at managers and think, ‘Are you sure?’ Quite clearly l lh they have shown that they know what they’re doing and what they want to do.” Chelsea have already splashed the cash this summer and more fresh faces are expected. However, Minto (below) says lavish recruitment will only get them so far.

“I think what they’ll have done is sit dow down and decide what they can learn from last season,” he said. “Th “They’ve already been adding to the team, for example. “And they also know that some of their current players can play a full season and some others are a little bit more inconsistent.

“But if they are to go to the next l level and compete with the t top t two, it will be about showing that they’re still progressing.”
