Ruthless Trump to outrank Nugget
SNOOKER legend Steve Davis believes world No.1 Judd Trump has found the relentless streak needed to dominate the game.
And ‘The Nugget’ is adamant that it’s just a matter of time before ‘The Juddernaut’ overtakes his major silverware haul.
Six-time world champion Davis landed a staggering 28 ranking tournaments but Trump has won 13 events in the past 26 months and now has 20 ranking titles.
“I bet he feels like he’s on a roll and can’t be stopped,” said Davis, 63.
“Where some players can’t sustain it, they may not be quite as relentless.
“It wasn’t that difficult for me when it happened because you have that momentum and want to keep winning.”
Trump’s desire was questioned when his lifestyle detracted from his skills on the table amid a lack of trophies.
But in the past two years especially, renewed focus and laser eye surgery have seen the Bristol potter become the sport’s biggest star.
Davis added: “If you were to try and think of which players would be relentless, you wouldn’t have necessarily thought it would be Judd Trump.
“But you don’t know which players have that trait and which don’t.
“However, it has turned out that he has that relentless streak.”
Trump, 31, missed out on challenging for the recent Masters after catching Covid but he is back in the mix for titles.
“The first day or two was tough to watch,” said Trump, who was forced to isolate for two weeks.
“You just have to sit it out and wait to be allowed out.”
Trump showed his ruthless streak yesterday by coming back from 5-1 down to beat Barry Hawkins 6-5 in the semis of the German Masters.
