they weren’t getting past Pickford as easily as they sometimes unpicked the defence in front of him.

Twice within a few minutes the Blues goalkeeper denied his England team-mates Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold with superb saves which deflated Klopp’s men.

Pickford’s heroics didn’t end there, with two more quality stops from Mo Salah and Gini Wijnaldum.

Everton’s sheer delight at the final whistle was a mixture of relief and joy at finally smashing their Anfield jinx.

By contrast, Liverpool trudged off having suffered a fourth straight league defeat for the first time since 1923. It’s turning into a season where anything that could go wrong has done for Klopp and his stars.

The latest blow was seeing Henderson limp off with a suspected hamstring injury in the first half and the German boss is being tested as never before.

Prior to kick-off he called the Everton manager ‘Carlo poker-face’ after learning Ancelotti’s line-up. But as things go from bad to worse for Liverpool there is no disguising Klopp’s emotions.

The Kop chief says he doesn’t need a break. But maybe a chill pill might help after another spat with the opposition in a season that’s clearly getting to him.

He’s argued with officials and media and last month chased Burnley boss Sean Dyche down the Anfield tunnel.

And as the 238th Merseyside derby slipped away he unwisely engaged Everton assistant Duncan Ferguson on the Anfield touchline.

It was minor spat, with Klopp taking exception to Big Dunc smiling at a Liverpool penalty appeal.

Klopp doesn’t give up, we know that.

But maybe instead of fighting the world, tying himself in knots with angst and anguish, he should just accept this is a season that can’t be rescued.
