Powell’s ex factor two much for Jones

- JOHN RICHARDSON

NICK POWELL returned to haunt former boss Nathan Jones as Stoke edged closer to the Championship top six.

The signing of the ex-Manchester United man is probably the only positive legacy from a miserable 10 months in charge of the Potters for the Welshman.

Powell was the star of the show as Jones was left red-faced on his first return to the bet365 Stadium since being sacked in 2019.

The Luton manager said: “When you come back to your old club you really want your players to step up and put on a performance.

“We were miles off. “It’s probably the worst performance I’ve ever had as Luton manager and by coincidence it’s come at my old club so I’m very disappointed.”

Powell’s first came after unselfish play from Steven Fletcher put him one on one with keeper Simon Sluga.

He beat the Hatters stopper to put his side ahead in the 20th minute.

And his aerial prowess was fully demonstrated as Stoke increased their lead in the 63rd minute.

Joe Allen galloped down the right before sending in a deep cross which produced a bullet header from Powell for his 10th of the season.

The home side weren’t finished and a mix-up between Martin Cranie and Sonny Bradley opened the door for Fletcher to net the third.

Stoke boss Michael O’Neill said: “It was a good result for us and it’s now back-to-back wins.”
