Terrier-ific!

HOLMES DOUBLE STUNS SWANS

- By Ian Murtagh

HUDDERSFIELD turned the form book upside down with a second-half goal blitz to bring Swansea’s nine-game unbeaten run to a shattering end.

With the Terriers winless this year it looked an away-day banker, especially after Conor Hourihane cancelled out Fraizer Campbell’s opener with a blistering free-kick just before half-time.

Instead, it all went horribly wrong for the Swans, with Lewis O’Brien’s goal and a double from American Duane Holmes sending Carlos Corberan’s side out of sight with three goals in seven incredible minutes.

And to complete a nightmare day for the Welsh side, Jordan Morris – one of five subs Steve Cooper had sent on before the hour mark – was stretchered off in agony after stumbling on the ball and landing awkwardly.

It led to a five-minute stoppage and left Swansea having to play the last 25 minutes with 10 men. “Fingers crossed for him but it does not look good,” said Swans boss Cooper.

“We don’t know the extent of the injury but he’s on crutches with his knee in a brace.”

Cooper claimed his side only had themselves to blame for a first league defeat since mid-December.

“We did not do the basics right and paid the price,” he said. “We were second best and got what we deserved.”

After watching his side spectacularly halt their slide, Corberan said: “It was so important for us to get that win and I was delighted with the performance.

“We did really well offensively and the team played with a lot of determination and courage especially in the way we reacted to their goal.” The visitors looked a shadow of the side who had amassed 23 points from their previous nine games, leaking more goals in one afternoon than they had during that golden spell.

But they briefly came to life in the minutes leading up to half-time – Matt Grimes firing inches wide with a 20-yard daisy-cutter and Jake Bidwell seeing his looping header cleared off the line by Naby Sarr.

And their belated pressure paid off in injury-time with a belting Hourihane set-piece pulling them level.

Huddersfield will count themselves unlucky not to have increased their lead after Campbell had ended his eight-game goal drought, sweeping home Pipa’s pull-back.

Moments later Bacuna’s effort came back off the inside of the post with Freddie Woodman beaten.

The Terriers rediscovered their bite after the restart in devastating fashion.

O’Brien fired them ahead again in the 48th minute after excellent link-up play between Campbell and Bacuna.

And four minutes later Holmes scored his first goal since rejoining the club from Derby last month, finishing in fine style from Aaron Rowe’s assist.

His second goal was even better, cutting in from the left before unleashing a 30-yard thunderbolt which gave Woodman no chance.

It went from bad to worse for Swansea when Morris’ knee buckled and he required lengthy treatment before leaving the pitch on a stretcher.
