Mega eggs are no yolk
SHOPPERS should buy smaller eggs because hens are being injured laying big ones, animal welfare campaigners say.
The British Hen Welfare Trust warns the birds are suffering from prolapses because of large eggs.
Farmers have reported “considerable squawking” from hens laying big ones, according to the trust.
Founder Jane Howorth urged people to buy “small, medium or mixed-weight eggs to help hens”. She added: “You’ll get more yolk for your money if you do, and the farmers and the hens will thank you.”
The trend for bigger eggs means smaller ones are downgraded for use in the processed food sector, meaning farmers lose out and hens have a more demanding daily laying task.
