Two face court over NI trouble

-

TWO men were denied bail after appearing in court yesterday in connection with the riots in Northern Ireland.

Matthew Shaw, 32, of Portadown, and Jonathan Maitland, 25, of Belfast, are both charged with rioting.

At Belfast Magistrates’ Court, Maitland was also accused of possessing petrol bombs.

Both were arrested after disorder on Thursday.

Meanwhile, police said they were pelted with Molotov cocktails and masonry during three hours of trouble on Friday.

Rioting broke out in Coleraine, Londonderry, where around 40 people, many wearing masks, tried to block the road by setting fire to pallets.

Police were also attacked with missiles and a car set on fire in a separate incident at Tiger’s Bay, a loyalist area in north Belfast.

North Area commander, Chief Supt Davy Beck said: “Thankfully, none of our officers were injured as a result of the attacks.”
