Law must have bite

-

DAILY Star Sunday readers love their animals.

Nothing makes us more irate than cruelty.

And the theft of our pets leaves us boiling mad and totally sickened.

Our dogs are currently treated as property by the law, so long sentences for the crooks who nick them are virtually non-existent.

They’re not property to us. They are much-loved members of the family.

So we welcome moves to make stealing dogs a specific offence, with jail sentences of up to two years.

It’s a Labour initiative which Home Secretary Priti Patel has signalled the Government may support.

It can’t come soon enough for our readers.

Their only complaint is that they would like the dog thieves locked up for longer.

This is organised crime and such offences are up by as much as 250%.

In some areas, it’s more profitable than dealing drugs.

We need laws with real bite. And we need them now.
