THE frantic periods of random activity when your cat or dog suddenly zooms around for no apparent reason have been given an official name.

They are called “frenetic random activity periods”, or FRAPs.

Experts think they help the pet engage their inner predator, helping to hone their survival instincts.

For the vast majority, FRAPs are a healthy expression of excitement.
