I beat the odds, but not furlong

-

IT was Grand National week and, even without a crowd, it’s such a thrill.

I was pretty lucky as my bet was each-way, but the horses only ran in one direction.

I guess I should have checked that with Harry Styles to be on the safe side, but still a good result for me.

Bets don’t often come good for me, like the time I bet on a horse to come in at 10/1 and it did. Unfortunately, the others came in at 12.30.

At a point-to-point meeting a couple of years back the horse I was rooting for was so slow that the jockey was able to keep a diary of the trip.

By the time the horse finished, it was so late he had to tiptoe into the stable so as not to wake the others. But I like the process of reading the form and judging the ground.

Here are a few runners I’ve picked out: Lunchtime – 12/1; Ron Seal – good over fences; V-neck – a good jumper; Dusty Carpet – never been beaten.

It was great to see everyone still dress up for Ladies’ Day at home.

That’s part of the fun, isn’t it? The glam, some fizz and a fun DJ set to dance to if you’re lucky.

The trouble comes when you wake up with a sore head the next day. But I blame it on the bookie.

I hear that hangovers caused by drinking wine in the day are the worst. But sometimes we all need a Riesling to be cheerful.

Was it a yay, nay or hay kind of day for you with the National?

Either way let’s look forward to next year, with a capacity crowd back at Aintree.
