1m kick cig habit

-

AT least a million smokers attempted to quit the habit during the lockdowns.

And of the four in 10 who tried to give up, one in seven succeeded without relapsing – three times the number before the pandemic struck, researchers at the University College London found.

Many did it without going to their GP for “stop smoking” aids. It means the Government’s target of getting 140,000 smokers to give up by next year has been easily beaten.

The most quitters during the first lockdown were in the South East (136,000), followed by the North West (102,000).

The figures put the UK on course to be “smoker-free” by 2030.
