Tyne Bridge, Newcastle

-

Of the seven bridges crossing the central section of the River Tyne, the Tyne Bridge is the most celebrated.

At the time of its construction it was the world’s longest single span bridge and was officially opened in 1928 by King George V.

Linking the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne to the neighbouring town of Gateshead, it was designed by engineering firm Mott, Hay and Anderson and was built by Dorman Long and Co. of Middlesbrough, the same team behind the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which opened four years later.

The Tyne Bridge Towers are opened to the public on special heritage days. This much-loved Newcastle landmark is also the most recognised part of the annual Great North Run. newcastlegateshead.com
