Tees Transporter, Middlesbrough
Built in 1911 and spanning 850ft, the Transporter was originally erected to ferry workers between factories and foundries in Middlesbrough and Port Clarence.
A section of moveable roadway is suspended by cables from the top of the bridge, transporting traffic by shuttling it back and forth.
Its famous gondola featured in the movie Billy Elliot. Although closed since 2019 for essential repair work, this landmark has been one of the UK’s major sites for sports such as abseiling and bungee jumps. middlesbrough.gov.uk
