An engineering marvel built from thousands of tons of Cornish granite, Portland stone and steel, it took construction workers eight years to complete.

Its famous bascules – giant moveable roadways – raise to 86-degree angles around 850 times a year.

In 1952, London bus driver Albert Gunter had to put his foot down to launch the number 78 from one to the other, as the bridge began to rise with the vehicle still on it!

More than 120 years old, it’s a popular tourist attraction, as well as a functional bridge. Visitors can strut the high-level West Walkway, taking in the views over the capital, experience seeing London life through the Glass Floor, and visit the Victorian Engine Rooms. towerbridge.org.uk
