It’s beers but no cheers for fans

-

THE County Cricket season started this week to remind us all how perilous the future of some sports remains due to the on-going Covid restrictions. Prime Minister Boris Johnson (left) said he couldn’t wait to pile down the pub for a pint when the new relaxations of the

coronavirus restrictions allow people to sit outside.

Few will argue against the prospect of being able to do just that.

But how can it be at all right that up to six people can gather round a table boozing, when not one single supporter is allowed to sit inside a cricket ground – or any other stadium for that matter – to watch some live sport?

The average age of members at Yorkshire Cricket Club is in the high 60s, meaning that there is a good chance some of them will have had their two vaccinations.

Last week I sat open mouthed in my local park as hundreds of kids and their

parents gathered in the playground to have some fun, while sticking two fingers up to the laws of the land.

In the meantime hundreds of clubs and associations stare into the financial abyss with a mixture of confusion and anger.

But as long as Boris can get a beer down his neck, then that’s ok.
