I’m wide awake to my new challenge says hero Waghorn

- By JAMES NURSEY

MARTYN WAGHORN is ready to give his all for new club Coventry despite admitting Derby’s final-day survival rollercoaster saw him to go bed at teatime!

Waghorn, 31, scored two goals as the Rams drew their crunch relegation decider 3-3 against Sheffield Wednesday.

They stayed up and the Owls went down but Derby were then unable to keep the out-of-contract striker.

The Rams’ ongoing dispute with the EFL prevented them from tying down Waghorn who had originally planned to stay.

Now he has vowed to take his all-action style to Coventry instead having shown just what a committed player he is by painfully colliding with a post when he inspired Wayne Rooney’s Rams to safety in May.

Asked if that was his most adrenalinecharged game, Waghorn replied: “Yeah, it was. Just the highs and lows during the 90 minutes.

“One of their lads was getting fed the other scorelines and getting information on to the pitch.

“He was telling us, ‘If we score now we are safe and you are going down bottom.’

“During the course of the game there was just so much emotion about it all.

“Then in the evening when it all settled down, it got to about 6pm and I said to my wife, ‘I have to go to bed, I am knackered.’

“Gone were the days of partying and celebrating.

“I got the kids to sleep and went to bed with a glass of wine.”

Waghorn’s brace on the final day saw the former Sunderland trainee finish with five goals last term.

Now he is hungry for more in Coventry’s colours ahead of their kick-off against Nottingham Forest this afternoon.

He added: “It is a fresh start for myself and I am looking forward to seeing how we get on.

“It came to a point where talks between myself and Derby weren’t going anywhere.

“I met the manager from here Mark Robins and we started talking about how he wanted to go, where I wanted to go and how I wanted to progress.

“It was kind of a no-brainer from there on in.

“I give my all no matter who I play for.

“Expect hard work, graft and hopefully that will lead to success in the future.”
