A PACKET FOR OLD CRISPS

Empty bags sold for up to £2k

OLD Walkers crisp bags are selling for fortunes on eBay.

One empty pack of salt and vinegar flavour, top right, comes with a £2,000 price tag.

Another seller is trying to tempt collectors to part with £695 for an empty ready salted pack from the firm’s #Payballer campaign in 2017.

The brand, fronted by Gary Lineker, gave buyers a chance to win up to £28,000.

The bag comes with an unopened packet containing a fiver.

Crisp expert John Mudd, who had his own company Real Crisp, is “astounded” by the prices.

He said: “It seems ridiculous to me, but having been in the industry since 1972 I have seen just about every packet that’s been on the market and I can’t imagine why anyone would want to pay good money for them.” Another eBay user is flogging an opened and “misprinted” packet of ready salted that is a faded grey instead of red. The rare error will cost £125 to add to your collection. Someone else is demanding £500 for a similarly misprinted packet of roast chicken flavour crisps they snapped up in 2004. Unopened packets are also being advertised at crazy prices, including a limited-edition packet of chilli and chocolate for £500.

In May, eBay seller Karen Chapman told MoneySavingExpert how she made £2,500 from selling empty crisp bags online.

Karen, 49, from Surrey, started collecting packs in the 1980s.

She forgot about her haul until they were discovered at her parents’ home.

Karen said: “I was going to recycle them. But I did a quick check on eBay and saw they were selling and people were paying quite a bit, so I put them up for sale instead. “Check before you chuck!”

It’s not just crisp packets that are in demand from collectors.

One eBay vendor is selling a crisp – which they describe as a “weird chip” with a cross in the middle of it – for £155.
