HOTEL OF THE WEEK

- BY PAUL BROWN

Castle Hotel, Windsor

WHERE AND WHY Most visitors to Windsor are going for one thing and one thing only – a mooch around the world-famous castle that is the Queen’s favourite residence.

But you can join Her Majesty in the lap of luxury with a stay at the Castle Hotel Windsor, which is right on the doorstep.

Windsor is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and if you’re lucky, your room will have a view overlooking it.

Located just a five-minute walk from the train station, this grand Georgian hotel has regal charm with a modern twist.

Think sweeping spiral staricases, afternoon teas and portraits of the royals in a 16th-century building, blended with a refined take on contemporary design.

In the rooms, Egyptian cotton sheets, free wifi, mineral water and toiletries from The White Company come as standard.

COVID CHECK-IN Guests and staff wear masks in public areas and Covid-safe procedures are taken very seriously.

Rooms are sanitised between guest usage and you will be met at the screened reception with a warm welcome. Hand sanitiser is available on arrival and tables are socially distanced in the bar and restaurant.

ON THE MENU The hotel has recently launched a lush new restaurant called Leaf, where you can dine in style surrounded by vined archways, cute little potted plants and fancy greenery.

There is also a beautiful terrace for al fresco dining where the horticultural theme continues. The Royal Platter of tempura calamari, grilled red wine octopus, Severn and Wye smoked salmon crostini and Madeira glazed grilled chorizo was delicious.

We particularly enjoyed the sumptuous Eton mess with strawberries, raspberry coulis, meringue and Chantilly cream that was big enough to share.

Starters from £6.50, mains from £14.50, desserts from £6.50. Full English or continental breakfast is included.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE On your royal tour, stop by the majestic Windsor Guildhall, where Charles and Camilla married in 2005, as well as St George’s Chapel, where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in 2018.

Stroll to the beautiful Alexandra Park by the banks of the River Thames, where you can take a boat out on the water.
