Fines for bad boys just don’t Hackett

- By JOHN RICHARDSON KEITH HACKETT was talking to the Old Spice Boys podcast out on Apple and Spotify and on twitter @theoldspiceboys.

FORMER FIFA referee Keith Hackett believes the FA should hit clubs with a points deduction if players continue to surround officials.

Hackett, head of Professional Game Match Officials Ltd in the early Premier League years, insists that fines are not enough.

Chelsea are the latest club to receive a slap on the wrist in the shape of a £25,000 FA fine for failing to control their players at Liverpool last month.

Hackett was the referee in 1990 when a 21-man brawl between Manchester United and Arsenal saw the hosts docked one point and the Gunners two.

“Points deduction was a real deterrent after that game,” he said.

“I think football was a little bit shocked.

“I think the FA have got to win back some control and in certain cases a points deduction should be considered.

“The Premier League and the PGMOL also have a responsibility to ensure the game’s image isn’t tarnished.

“I think the FA have let football down.

“Chelsea players surrounded Anthony Taylor – more than three which is allowed.

“Everyone saw it and that’s the catalyst that starts the ball rolling at grassroots level.”

Hackett is also urging former players to join in the VAR process at Stockley Park.

He added: “I believe that former referees could help and I don’t see any reason why former players cannot be involved in the process either.

“Why should there be any mystique in the decision making?

“VAR has been a massive frustration for me because I have seen technology being used incorrectly.”
