EVERTON’S two new flying wingers have got the seal of approval from arguably one of the greatest of all to grace Goodison Park.
Two-time league winner Kevin Sheedy says Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray have been revelations since joining the club this summer – and all for less than a month’s worth of wages for big-name star James Rodriguez.
While there was little excitement surrounding their arrival, Sheedy believes new manager Rafael Benitez has played a blinder by bringing the pair to Merseyside.
Gray, a £1.8million signing from Bayer Leverkusen, has already found the net twice and Townsend, a free transfer from Crystal Palace, has notched an assist as the Toffees took seven points from their first three games.
They will be aiming to maintain that momentum at home to Burnley tomorrow night and Sheedy (right) senses a different kind of buzz around Goodison since the hasty departure of former boss Carlo Ancelotti to
Real Madrid.
“Demarai and Andros have made a really big impact since coming in, they have been great,” the former Republic of Ireland international said.
“It just goes to show that you don’t have to spend absolute fortunes and waste big money on players who don’t deliver for you.
There are still bargains available out there, players that have something to prove and also have the kind of experience that will help a dressing room. “That’s what Rafa has brought in with these two.
“They have shown that they can play a pass, create chances and score goals but they’ve also shown a willingness to put in hard work for the team and that’s absolutely crucial, especially for Rafa.
“That has not always been there in the last few years with different managers bringing in big players. So far it’s looking like Rafa is bringing together a team that the fans will really want to get behind because of their ability but also their work ethic.”
