Pagans joining the military have increased from around 100 to over
300 since 2016, while the Rastafarian troop figures soared from 150 to
610 in the same period. Twenty people serving in the forces identify as Wiccans – some of whom practise spells.
Last year, an RAF officer is believed to have been the first Rastafarian in the armed forces to receive an MBE. Squadron Leader Kyle Roachford said he was “humbled”.
Rastafarians even have their own group within the military called
Defence Rastafari Network UK, which acts as a focal point for serving members of the faith in both military and civil service.
Figures released by the Ministry of Defence in a Freedom of Information request show there are also 1,070 Buddhists, 70 Mormons, 40 Spiritualists,
30 Christian Scientists and
20 Druids in the forces. An MoD source said: “There is strength in diversity and the armed forces is now a very broad and welcoming organisation. Anyone from any religion is now welcome.” tools, planners, menus and more.
