Calls for Carroll as Grant has last word

- By IAN BAKER

WEST BROM fans chanted the name of Andy Carroll – despite Karlan Grant ending their goal drought of over four hours.

Boss Steve Bruce has decided to release the former Newcastle striker in the summer but their recent woes continued until Grant finally scored late in this drab end-ofseason contest.

Carroll will not play again for West Brom and Baggies supporters are upset judging by their reaction yesterday.

But Bruce said: “Andy Carroll has done great for us, he’s been in better nick than in a number of year. He’s just unfortunate that we have another two forwards in Daryl Dike and Kenneth Zohore this summer who will be fit.

“That was a really, really tough decision because I know how popular he was in the dressing room. I need to think about the overall balance of the squad and his wages will free up someone else.

“I’m sure the phone will ring. He’s fit and never missed a day’s training.”

West Brom could have taken an early lead, with Semi Ajayi heading against the post from Adam Reach’s cross.

The game appeared to be heading towards a draw until Grant scored his 16th of the season in the 78th minute.

Reading boss Paul Ince has led his side to safety and will meet with owner Dai Yongge this week to discuss his future.

He said: “Being back in management is great and we achieved our challenge.”
