Legend is a naughty boy

JOHN SONG MAKES MUM BLUSH

-

HE has a reputation for being the nice man of soul but John Legend’s latest album had his own mum blushing.

It boasts a sexy R&B jam called Splash that’s a little racier than his normal romantic ballads.

At an exclusive London album event for double LP Legend, he explained: “I call the song ‘classy nasty.’

“We do Splash live and we have female dancers doing a simulated synchronised swimming routine and it’s quite sexy. My mother was there and when I showed what they were wearing, she blushed.”

The album boasts 24 tracks and one, Wonder Woman, was written for Mrs Legend senior.

He explained that it’s for “my mum, my grandmother, my wife – all the women that have made a huge impact in my life. It’s in honour of all the special women in our lives who make magic happen.” The quality of the songs on Legend means it never feels too long, but it could have been even bigger.

“I feel it’s the best work I’ve ever done,” John said. “There will be like 60 tracks you won’t hear – I write a lot, especially if I collaborate. And because of the pandemic we had more free time. These will be C-sides, D-sides.” Legend boasts a raft of collabs including Rick Ross, Jhene Aiko and Ty Dolla $ign. “Collaborations are the best combat for writer’s block because having two or three people in a room together can spark the imagination rather than being locked in a moment alone. It’ll be better than you could do alone.” The real key to John’s success is how humble he is: “There’s no guarantee. I feel like every time I create a new album, I have to prove myself.”
