Parkgate, Cardiff
WHERE AND WHY
Set in the heart of the Welsh capital on Westgate Street, two of the city’s iconic Grade II-listed buildings – the former Head Post Office and old county court – have been redeveloped and beautifully restored to house this glamorous four-star hotel which has been welcoming guests since October last year.
Dating back to the turn of the 20th century, the 170-room hotel oozes elegance and charm with its Victorian facade and the lobby’s jaw-dropping vaulted ceiling.
Our room, a very spacious suite, was equally as splendid with a wraparound balcony, high ceilings, walk-in wardrobe and luxurious bathroom.
Huge windows offer stunning views of Cardiff Castle and
Principality Stadium and an opportunity to stargaze before a perfect night’s sleep on extremely comfy beds.
ON THE MENU
The Sorting Room restaurant, occupying the grand rooms of the old
Post Office, has quickly become the city’s chic new dining destination.
Its mouthwatering menu focuses on produce sourced locally – including meat from award-winning Trealy Farm.
We kicked off with delicious (and very generously sized) starters of grilled black tiger prawns and smoked octopus and crispy pork.
Then we tucked into rump steak and beef and ale pie for mains (starters from £7, mains from £18 and desserts from £7.50).
There’s also an extensive wine and cocktail list – the Love Letter is highly recommended if you like your cocktails sweet and fruity.
WHILE YOU’RE THERE
The hotel’s rooftop spa on the sixth floor is the place to unwind and relax, complete with heated pool, sauna and steam room as you look out over the city skyline – watching the sun set was particularly spectacular.
Just a drop-kick away from Principality Stadium, so the hotel offers an ideal base for rugby fans.
Pay a visit to Cardiff Castle and find out about its fascinating history dating back over 2,000 years.
And Cardiff’s shopping arcades offer plenty of retail therapy.
