United can achieve so much more – McClair
MANCHESTER UNITED legend Brian McClair knows what it’s like to be a winner.
And the Old Trafford favourite is hoping the Red Devils can land their second piece of silverware this season under new boss Erik ten Hag by winning the FA Cup, a competition which kickstarted a glorious run of success under Sir Alex Ferguson.
McClair starred in the side that won the FA Cup in 1990 and helped legendary boss Ferguson land his first trophy at the club.
And, as they say, the rest is history as the Scottish international went on to win 13 more trophies during a glittering career at the club and Ferguson pocketed a staggering 38 titles across his decorated reign.
“I wanted to win Scottish Cup finals when I was up in Scotland, but winning something for Manchester United for the first time was always going to be a great event and something to cherish, especially at Wembley,” said McClair (below), ahead of United’s home quarter-final clash with Fulham today.
“I think it was Bryan Robson who said to me ‘enjoy this, because we might never come back here’.
“He said to try and cherish every moment of winning it. It was a great event.
“Winning was the most important thing – and that kickstarted something for us. Winning trophies becomes a habit, that was always at the forefront of Sir Alex Ferguson’s mind. “He’d been a serial winner in Scotland with St Mirren and Aberdeen – and he was proven to be correct. What he went on to achieve was mind-boggling, really.”
McClair enjoyed plenty of success as United’s Director of Youth Academy after hanging up his boots and retired from football in 2016.
He now has his own popular podcast called, aptly enough, Life of Brian. But he continues to watch his beloved club and recently enjoyed a 30th reunion dinner with his former players to celebrate winning the Premier League for the first time.
Looking ahead to United’s clash with the Cottagers, McClair said: “You’d think United would be favourites because they’re playing at home – and there’s this continual drive to finish in the top four.
“I’m happy they’re trying to win things by playing the strongest team.”
