- AT BRUNTON PARK

CARLISLE are 90 minutes away from League One, 14 months after looking set to crash through the Football League trapdoor.

Extra-time goals from Callum Guy and Ben Barclay set up a Wembley final against Stockport next weekend.

But Barclay will be a reluctant spectator as he’s on loan from Stockport.

The game looked set to be settled by penalties when Bradford’s veteran striker Matt Derbyshire scored just 27 seconds into the second half of extra time.

But Barclay pounced in the 112th minute, meeting Owen Moxon’s cross with a firm header.

Paul Simpson is already a Carlisle legend after his first managerial spell at the club and his rescue act last term. They’ll be building a statue of him outside Brunton Park soon!

The Cumbrians had been good value for their halftime lead and could have been further ahead but for Harry Lewis’ heroics in the Bradford goal.

As Carlisle pushed hard for a second goal, he somehow kept out a ferocious Moxon volley after Joe Garner’s near post header had thudded against the post.

Perhaps he could have done better for the hosts’ 21st-minute goal which wiped out the deficit from last Sunday’s first leg.

Lewis could only parry Moxon’s low drive and when the ball broke loose, the sliding Brad Halliday, under pressure from Gordon, put the ball into his own net.

Carlisle dug deep in extra time and when Moxon flung over a corner, Guy met Halliday’s headed clearance with a sweet volley which beat Lewis’ despairing dive.

Then just moments into the second half, Bradford were level on aggregate when Derbyshire met Scott Banks’ left-wing cross.

But the Bantams’ joy was short-lived with Barclay heading home Moxon’s cross.
