Ward doubles up to sting Hornets

-

OLD hand Danny Ward made it a great day for the Terriers’ new boss.

German Andre Breitenreiter took over during the week – and saw sub Ward hand him a win with two late goals.

With Watford 1-0 up, Ward stepped off the bench just after the hour. He levelled with a 71st-minute header, then grabbed the points with a cheeky flick seven minutes from time.

Breitenreiter, 50, said: “Danny is a really good player who has played in the Premier League.

“During the week, he was very motivated in training. We could see that he wanted to play – and to start! Danny was ready to go on the whole time today.

“But this morning, I thought this would not be possible. Some of our players were missing and I spoke to the team and told them no-one thought we could win this game because we were missing some players.

“We have a team of high quality and potential and you saw that. We had an excellent first half with our high press and we should have taken the lead.”

Huddersfield’s first-half show was so good that Watford boss Valerien Ismael was forced to hook two of his players after just 27 minutes.

But the visitors’ chance seemed to have gone when Watford took a 55th-minute lead through Emmanuel Dennis from close range.

But it all went wrong – and now Watford have gone seven matches without a home win.

Ismael admitted: “As a a manager, I am not comfortable with the performance and result but the players are responsible for their own performance.”
