MORE than a quarter of births in Britain are from foreign women.

A whopping 27% of newborn babies in 2014 were to mothers born outside the UK.

Yesterday’s Office for National Statistics findings come weeks after figures showed 2014 saw 641,000 immigrants flock to Britain, a hike from 526,000 the year before.

The ONS stats also revealed the average age of mothers increased to 30.2 years in 2014, from exactly 30 the year before.

Louise Silverton of the Royal College of Midwives said the figures highlighted the need for funding for new midwives.

She added: “Births are becoming more complex as the average age of mothers increases. This places additional pressures on maternity services.”

There were 695,233 births recorded in 2014, a fall of 3,279 on the previous year.

And almost half of the births were to unmarried mums, the highest figure since records began in 1938.

The ONS figures also showed that cancer was the “most common broad cause of death”, accounting for 29% of those registered.

Circulatory diseases, such as heart disease and strokes, caused 27% of deaths.
