GOOD LORD IT’S WRONG £200m kitty is ‘overboard’

ARSENE WENGER has slapped down claims from Arsenal director Lord Harris that he has £200m to burn.

Harris said this week: “Apart from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, he could have any player.

“We could go into the market and probably buy any player in the world, apart from half a dozen who are unbuyable. There’s over £200m in the bank.”

But boss Wenger said yesterday: “He has gone a bit overboard there because that’s not true.

“We are in the situation that I explained many times where we are working hard so that if an opportunity comes up, we will do something.

“I do not want to go into details too much because it is not too much about a number.

“Our opponents, if they want, have that money to spend, so it is not something that is absolutely exceptional.

“Money in the bank does not mean profit. We lost money in the last six months.

“You can be bankrupt and have £200m in the bank.”

Wenger would still love to sign French striker Karim Benzema from Real Madrid, who scored in a 4-1 friendly win over Manchester City yesterday.

But Madrid boss Rafa Benitez insists the 27-year-old won’t be sold to the Gunners – or anyone else.

“People are always asking about players that maybe we will buy and I say, ‘I don’t talk because they belong to other teams’,” he said.

“In this case, Karim Benzema is our player and I am sure that he will stay with us.”

Meanwhile, Wenger insists goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny does still have a future at Arsenal.
