CRIME BOTCH Murder actor is suspect
AN innocent actor who played a Crimewatch murder case suspect 21 years ago has been DNA tested after viewers claimed he was the killer.
Steve Watson, 53, played a man wanted for the murder of Julie Pacey in the TV reconstruction in 1994.
The mum-of-two was found dead at her home in Grantham, Lincs, and her killer was never caught.
Steve, who lived 15 miles away, said he was abused at the time by confused locals who mistook him for the murderer.
Now two people have called police naming him as the suspect after the original appeal was reshown on Crimewatch last month. Father-of-three IN FRAME: Dad Steve Steve, from Newark, Notts, has given police a DNA sample.
He said: “As soon as I saw it back on TV I was filled with dread that I might be mistaken for him again.
“I got a call from my daughter saying: ‘Dad, there’s a police officer at the door for you.’ My heart just sank.
“I asked the officer if I was a suspect and he said everybody was until they were ruled out. Until my results are cleared I’m still in the frame.”
DNA evidence from the scene was reanalysed this year and a full profile has been obtained with the latest technology.
Lincolnshire Police said they received more than 100 calls after the re-run.
