DON’T MISS OUT AGAIN

Murray in LTA blast

- By IAIN STEWART

ANDY MURRAY has launched an astonishing attack on the Lawn Tennis Association for failing to make the most of his history of success in the sport.

Murray’s blast came within hours of the Scot spearheading Great Britain’s Davis Cup victory over Belgium and was backed by team captain Leon Smith.

Demanding the LTA do not miss another opportunity to promote the sport, as he feels they did in the wake of his 2013 Wimbledon triumph, Murray said: “They need to act on it now. It’s no use doing it in 18 months. Start!

“I hope it is a bigger catalyst than when I won Wimbledon. A lot more could be done and should be done to capitalise on all this success in British tennis over the last five or six years.

“We may never get a better opportunity. A lot of the people I am close to feel a lot more could be done. I hope that is the case now.” Murray is particularly concerned at the lack of British juniors on the undercard of Grand Slams.

He warned: “We always had good juniors competing for Grand Slams. Now it seems that isn’t really happening.

“Bringing them on from being the best juniors to the best seniors was something we weren’t so good at. Now we don’t even have the juniors. It is not ideal.”

Smith was quick to dismiss the LTA’s role in Britain ending a 79-year wait to win the Davis Cup. The skipper said: “This isn’t an LTA thing. This is a Davis Cup team. It’s about these guys. It is a team, it is down to what these guys do on court.”

Mothballing the National Tennis Centre at Roehampton, just seven years after it was opened, was branded an expensive mistake by Murray.

He added: “Whether you agreed with the Centre or not, it is there now so use it

“I went to the NTC to practice one Monday at three o’clock and then on Tuesday, the same time. “There was not one person using any of the indoor courts and not one person in the gym.

“The place cost £40m and there are no people. It was empty.” SOLID GOLD: Murray wins Wimbledon in 2013
