I CAN’T say anything to my wife without her acting up and over-reacting.

I mentioned downsizing to a smaller property and she went out the next day and put ours on the market.

Then I suggested clearing out some of our clutter and she gave all of my books, CDs and DVDs to the charity shop.

Now she says she’s leaving me. All I did was propose separate holidays this year.

She says she’d rather get divorced, get half the money and start again.

I’m gutted. She insists that she’s not unhappy and doesn’t hate me, but thinks it would be a good time for us to split up.

Apparently she wants go travelling. If I’d thought that she would suggest this, I would have kept my mouth shut. JANE SAYS: Keep talking to your wife. Explain how shocked and devastated you are.

What can you do to make her change her mind? If you’ve become complacent or boring then you’ll improve.

If she wants to go travelling, then why don’t you downsize and go travelling together?

This could be the start of an exciting time. Tell her you want to go on this adventure with her.

If she’s determined to jettison you, then maybe you’ll have to start accepting that the writing is on the wall.

Has she actually been looking for an opportunity to dump you for ages?

Please ask her to start being open and honest regarding her true thoughts.
