DEENEY’S OK TO BLAST AWAY

- By IAN BAKER

TROY DEENEY has been given the green light to carry on blasting his team-mates.

The Watford captain was furious at the Hornets’ 2-0 capitulation at Burnley on Monday night and in an angry post-match interview accused his side of being “bullied”.

Boss Walter Mazzarri has defended Deeney and told him to continue criticising if necessary.

Ahead of today’s home clash with Bournemouth, he said: “If somebody goes to a press conference he has to say what he has seen. Troy said the truth.

“He is like me, a loyal person and not afraid to say the truth.

“My principle and what I ® always try to teach my players is not to try and create an alibi and excuses.

“If my players say what we all said in the dressing room, it is the truth. They have to be able to say it. This is something that the fans are happy with.

“With Chelsea, even though we lost we played a great game and we said that. Maybe we should have had a better destiny.

“Burnley, we did not play a great game and we said that. There is nothing wrong with that. I told the players that this

must only be an episode and never happen again.”

Striker Deeney is thought to be in the running for Gareth Southgate’s first England squad with Harry Kane sidelined.

Mazzarri added: “It would be a great boost of confidence for him and satisfaction for myself and all the fans of Watford. We are all rooting for him.”

The Italian boss is 55 today but admits he will not celebrate the occasion whatever the outcome against Eddie Howe’s side.

He added: “I was born the same day as my father and he died several years ago. Because of this reason I don’t celebrate it anymore.”
