There’s a clash, for starters, with a pair of rival youngsters, both sides staking claim to an island they’ve discovered.
That, plus a mystery surrounding the rival kids’ enigmatic, houseboatdwelling uncle (Rafe Spall). MODUS (15) NEED cheering up on these cold winter nights? This Swedish serial killer drama, recently seen on BBC4, probably won’t help.
But if you’re a fan of similarly moody, absorbingly intense Nordic thrillers such as Borgen and The $18.5m $16.8m $10.4m $5.5m $4.5m $3.9m $3.1m $3.1m $3.0m $2.2m Killing, it’ll have you equally hooked. Melinda Kinnaman plays a criminal psychologist whose autistic daughter witnesses a fatal attack and who finds herself drawn into the murder hunt. MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES (15) BROTHERS Mike and Dave (Adam Devine, Zac Efron) are party animals, but for their sister’s upcoming wedding they’re warned by their dad to be on their best behaviour.
So, placing an ad to find suitably “nice” women to accompany them should see to that, right?
Wrong. Alice and Tatiana (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza) may seem ideal. But it turns out they’re, er, very much not... LIGHTS OUT (15) AS a kid, were you scared of the dark? If not, you sure as hell will be after watching this scare-yourpants-off horror.
There’s a terrifying female apparition who pops up only when the lights are out – and vanishes the moment they’re switched on.
And for the already screwed-up family at the heart of the story, it’s awakening all kinds of demons. ASTERIX: THE MANSIONS OF THE GODS (PG) IT’S 2,000-plus years ago, and those pesky Romans reckon they can just steam in and occupy wherever they fancy.
OK, mostly they’re right. But the plucky barbarians led by Asterix are proving less of a pushover, so a rather more underhand Plan B is called for.
