SIX SHOOTER

Monk sets his target

- by DAVE LYONS

GARRY Monk has named the day when he will finally admit Leeds are promotion contenders.

There is a growing belief around Elland Road that this could be the season the club end their 12-year exile from the Premier League.

They hit fifth after a midweek win over Reading when top scorer Chris Wood was on target again, and they will look to capitalise when Brentford visit today.

When asked if a return to the top flight is in his sights, Monk said: “If we are in the top six after the final game of the season, then I’ll say we are in with a shout of going up.”

Strong

It is the former Swansea manager’s way of keeping his players grounded and fully focused on the task ahead.

As his side chase their seventh home win from nine, the ex-Swansea boss added: “It is pleasing to see the team looking physically strong, and our home form has provided us with a big source of confidence.

“We didn’t do ourselves justice with the performance in losing 2-0 at Brighton last week. We were architects of our own downfall as we made mistakes you cannot afford to make in this league.

“But the way we reacted to that defeat was very pleasing because there are no easy games in this division.

“We see that every week, and the players understand that our focus has to be on putting in maximum effort in every game. They know, when we do that, we are capable of causing anyone problems.

“It is important for us to carry on our good run at Elland Road, and we will be doing all we can to secure another three points against Brentford.

“We are improving all the time, but we need to make sure we keep on doing that.”
