FOOTBALL is braced for a winter white-out as forecasters warn an icy Arctic superstorm is about to hit Britain.

Temperatures could plunge to -10C with blizzards in some areas this weekend, sparking fixture chaos.

TOP flight football faces a crisis this weekend with a -10C big freeze threatening to bring the game to its knees.

A mix of “thundersnow” storms and sub-zero temperatures could create a white-out forcing the postponement of several Premier League matches.

With the north of England due to be blanketed by snow, games at Sunderland, Burnley and Hull could be called off. Sunday matches at Old Trafford in Manchester and Everton’s Goodison Park are also in peril.

Despite revamped grounds and heated pitches, the terraces and match-day entry routes could be turned into ice rinks.

A Premier League spokesman said: “Clubs have protocols in place which, should weather conditions require it, include working with local statutory bodies to take safety advice ahead of a match.”

The cold weather will hit Britain from today just like it has Greece and Spain.

Forecasters predict the rain storms could turn to blizzards as temperatures plunge.

The Army has also been put on stand-by to keep the country moving. With roads and rail links closed, Government officials fear nationwide blackouts could cripple the country

Northern Ireland, Scotland, and the north will be the worst hit today by the cold snap which will move south by Friday.

The Met Office said: “Lightning may accompany the heaviest showers with potential disruption to power supplies.”

Rod Dennis, of the RAC, warned that driving conditions would be “tricky”.
