THEY are TV’s chefs and food gurus who are always trying to tempt our tastebuds. But how do they stay healthy despite all those delicious ingredient­s and yummy dishes? Here, as the new series of MasterChef hits BBC One screens tonight, JAMES MOORE serves up some of their secret recipes for a healthier body… John Torode Health secret: Lots of water. Who: He says: “Water helps your body function better, it makes your skin look awesome and it keeps your energy levels up. Try to drink two to three litres a day and you will notice a big difference.” Why it works: Nearly 70% of us don’t drink enough water yet a study published in the journal Obesity showed increasing water consumptio­n can aid weight loss. Other research shows it can boost mental performanc­e. Jamie Oliver Who: TV chef who has launched famous crusades on healthy school dinners and a sugar tax on fizzy drinks. The 41-year-old recently lost two stone himself too. Health secret: Less meat, more veg. He says: “I lost 12 kilos quite quickly and I didn’t do it through not eating. I ate a lot, more than I was used to. I pushed meat down, pushed veggie up, got more sleep and movement.” Why it works: A European study of almost 400,000 adults found that eating meat was linked with weight gain, while other research at Harvard University in the US showed that upping your intake of fruit and veggies containing flavonoids, like peppers, can aid weight control. Paul Hollywood Who: Star of The Great British Bake Off, the 51-year-old celebrity baker recently went on a “health spurt” Health secret: Why it works: Gregg Wallace Who: Health secret: Why it works: Joe Wicks Who: BODY COACH: Joe VEG FAN: Jamie after tasting all the treats on the show took its toll. Health secret: Boxing lessons and calorie control. He says: “I’m just reducing my calorie intake and I’m seeing a personal trainer, boxing and weightlift­ing.” Why it works: Cutting just 100 calories a day – the same as in a chocolate biscuit – can help you start to lose weight, according to a study from the University of Colorado. Boxing is also a great way to burn calories – using up to 700 an hour, equivalent to a large burger. James Martin Who: The 44-year-old star of James Martin’s French Adventure and former Saturday Kitchen host recently lost three stone. Health secret: Eating more fish. He says: “I no longer stuff my face with really bad things such as takeaway pizza, Mars bars and fizzy soft drinks. Now I eat fish twice a week.” Why it works: Research from Japan has shown that omega-3 fats found in fish like salmon turn “bad” fat cells into ones that help burn calories. Mary Berry Who: The ex-Great British Bake Off judge works hard to stay slim, to show that you can have your cake and eat it. Health secret: Soup. She says: “I have soup at lunchtime and I know exactly how many calories are in that soup. I don’t have bread with it, but I might have a salad if it’s very hot… it’s about everything in moderation.” Why it works: Eating soup can help control the number of calories you eat according to two US studies.
