WENGER HOLDS ON

ARSENE WENGER thanked Arsenal fans for not turning against him yesterday.

A small number of protesters marched to the Emirates demanding he quit but those inside the stadium backed their team as the Gunners twice came from behind against top-four rivals Manchester City.

Theo Walcott cancelled out Leroy Sane’s opener and then Shkodran Mustafi rescued a point after Sergio Aguero had put City back in front.

But while Arsenal remain sixth, seven points behind fourth-placed City with a game in hand, boss Wenger insists they passed a big mental test.

He said: “I felt our fans were fantastic. In the difficult moments in the game our fans

could have turned against us and they were absolutely sensational.

“I’m not aware of what is happening outside the stadium. What matters is what happens inside the stadium. I feel the fans were outstanding today.

“We started with a high level of anxiety and were punished straight away. It was a mental test. You could see the team was touched on the confidence front.

“But in the end, we have shown great mental resources.”

Asked about his future, Wenger added: “I love this club, I don’t know how long I will be here. The decision will be soon.”

Pep Guardiola claimed City should have had a penalty in stoppage time for a Nacho Monreal handball.

The City boss said: “Monreal said he touched the ball with the hand but that in England, that kind of situation, there’s no whistles.

“I don’t come here to talk about the referees. But of course, if Monreal said it, that’s all. I control what I can control. We have to play better.

“I can’t do anything about the decisions of the referee. It’s not my business. But it’s bad.”
