PM wades into Easter row

® FURIOUS Theresa May yesterday waded into a row over claims the word Easter had been dropped from an annual egg hunt.

The PM blasted chocolate giant Cadbury and the National Trust as “absolutely ridiculous” for leaving the religious festival out of the title of their annual event.

Mrs May hit out after the heritage charity used the title The Cadbury Egg Hunt.

“I’m not just a vicar’s daughter,” she said. “I’m a member of the National Trust. I think the stance is absolutely ridiculous and I don’t know what they’re thinking about.”

Her comments echoed those of Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu, who said the decision to omit the word Easter was like “spitting on the grave” of the chocolate firm’s founder John Cadbury, a devout Christian.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also added: “It upsets me as I don’t think Cadbury’s should take over the name.”

Both organisations last night dismissed the row as “nonsense”. A Trust spokesman said: “A casual glance at our website will see dozens of references to Easter throughout.”

Cadbury’s added its marketing “clearly states” the word Easter and include it in a number of promotional materials. It prompted Lib Dem leader Tim Farron to say: “Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn have egg on their faces. They both scrambled out eggstraordinary statements criticising Cadbury’s and the National Trust for something they haven’t done.”

But last night the Trust was accused of quietly updating its web page that read “Join the Cadbury Egg Hunt” by adding the words “this Easter”.
