Good brews: Take sugar in your tea or coffee? A teaspoon of the stuff contains 4g of sugar. Cut out just one a day from your cuppa and you could save 360g and 1,440 calories in three months – the same as seven chocolate bars. Adele put her weight loss down to kicking a sugary tea habit. Cereal griller: The NHS says cutting out bowls of sugary breakfast cereal for a healthier version could chop 22 sugar cubes from your weekly diet. Weetabix, for instance, has just 1.7g per two biscuits, as opposed to Frosties which has 11g per portion. Jam buster: Swap sugary jam or honey for Marmite or peanut butter and you could save as much as 10g of sugar per serving. Or opt for one of the reduced sugar options. Hartley’s Strawberry Jam has 8g per teaspoon – their reduced sugar version 5.7g. Snack attack: Biscuits on a break are one of our biggest downfalls. Choose a brand with less sugar like Rich Tea, typically 1.8g sugar per biscuit compared to 4.9 for a chocolate digestive. Or grab a sugar-free snack like unsalted nuts. Saucy tip: Enjoy some ketchup on a bacon sarnie? Sauces like these, even Salad Cream, can contain a teaspoon of sugar per serving. But there are healthier versions around. Heinz’s reduced sugar ketchup has 1.7g sugar per 15ml, compared to 3.4g in the regular variety. Pop-tastic: One can of fizzy drink a day can increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by around a fifth. Swap a can of cola (35g sugar) for a diet version and you’ll drop a kilo bag of sugar over a month and 12,649 calories – more than 12 takeaways over three months. Lunch legend: A can of baked beans often contains three teaspoons of sugar. Choose one of the reduced sugar versions like the one offered by Branston – it contains 30% less sugar than ordinary beans. Choc shock: Under the new rules, chocolate bars will have to be under 200 calories. A 51g Mars bar currently has 230 and 30g of sugar and a Flake has 171 calories and 18g. Sweet tricks: A single jelly baby has at least one teaspoon of sugar. Four of those racks up 20g of sugar. The same number of wine gums is just 14g, which you could trade for seven fruit pastilles! Cake shake-down: Teatime treat? Opt for Soreen fruit loaf at 6g sugar or a slice of McVitie’s Jamaican Ginger Cake at 9g. Avoid icing. One Mr Kipling’s Cherry Bakewell is 18g! Pasta pointer: A third of a jar of pasta sauce can contain about three teaspoons of sugar. Low fat doesn’t always mean low sugar. Dolmio Low Fat Bolognese sauce has 5.2g per 100g, Dolmio Creamy Lasagne has 3.2g but much higher fat levels. Just desserts: A Strawberry Muller corner yoghurt has 12.6g of sugar per ADDED sugars, such as table sugar, honey and syrups shouldn’t make up more than 5% of your energy a day – that’s 30g – around seven teaspoons for anyone aged over 11. 100g but natural yoghurt like Yeo Valley has 5.6g. You can cut down on ice cream: Carte D’Or Caramel has 18g sugar per portion but Carte D’Or Vanilla Light 11g. Get app-y: The Sugar Smart app from Public Health England, available at the App Store or Google Play, allows you to scan barcodes to work out how many 4g cubes of sugar are in your favourite products. Get label wise: A product high in sugar is where it has 22.5g or more per 100g. One reckoned to be low in sugar has 5g or less per 100g. Eggs-tra Eggs-tra: With some kids eating the equivalent of 200 doughnuts worth of sugar in chocs, look out for those lower in sugar. Go for a dark chocolate egg. A Green and Black’s 70% cocoa egg has half the sugar of a milk chocolate egg.
