GARRY MONK’S Leeds suffered a second defeat in four days as they continue to lose momentum in the Championship promotion race.

The Elland Road outfit were desperate to bounce back after Saturday night’s 1-0 defeat against play-off rivals Reading but the nerves showed at Griffin Park against a vibrant Bees side.

The weekend setback at the Madejski Stadium ended an unbeaten run going back to February 11 and was enough to put United’s play-off spot in doubt just at the wrong moment.

Keeping hold of a top-six place is vital for a club that has not played in the Premier League since 2004.

But Monk’s outfit made a ® miserable start in west London where lively Brentford romped through the first half without Leeds laying a glove on them.

The Bees could have gone ahead early on when winger Sergi Canos ballooned an excellent chance over the crossbar from a cutback by Josh Clarke.

But Dean Smith’s in-form hosts made amends for that miss in the 19th minute when Canos’ fierce shot following a lightning-quick break by Jota was well saved by Robert Green only for Romaine Sawyers to drill home the rebound from distance.

It could have been 2-0 but Green did just enough to keep out Lasse Vibe when the Dane was clean through after 32 minutes.

However, the Bees did strike again after another stunning break two minutes later.

This time former England keeper Green saved from livewire Canos but Vibe tucked home his 13th goal of the season.

Mo Barrow had Leeds’ first meaningful effort on goal after the break as the visitors stepped up a gear.

And central defender Pontus Jansson also saw a header cleared off the Brentford line.
