Game on as Theresa wins thumping vote in favour of snap General Election522-13
THERESA May’s snap General Election was given overwhelming backing by MPs yesterday.
By 522 to 13 votes, they agreed to fire the starting pistol on a hectic 50-day sprint to the polls on June 8.
ITV has confirmed it will host a leaders’ debate during the election campaign despite Theresa May’s insistence that she will not take part.
Mrs May faced taunts of “frit” from Labour backbenchers at Prime Minister’s Questions. THIRTEEN MPs voted against a Commons motion calling for an early election.
Nine were Labour, including Clive Lewis who accused Mrs May of turning his private life upside down.
The Norwich South MP is set to wed sweetheart Katy Steel on May 6. “Theresa May has thrown a clanger into my personal life! The honeymoon has had to go,” he said.
Eight of the nine Liberal Democrat MPs voted in favour of the motion, with ex-leader Nick Clegg the one not listed. MP Natalie McGarry dramatically fainted in the Commons yesterday, then said she was “delighted” to announce that she is pregnant.
The 36-year-old is currently suspended by the SNP following a police probe into money that allegedly went missing from two proindependence groups. A CONSERVATIVE MP who has been battling cancer has said he will stand again for election.
Nick Boles, 51, the MP for Grantham and Stamford, said recent scans showed the cancer had been eradicated. APPLICATIONS to register to vote surged in the hours following the announcement of the election.
Some 150,000 applications were made on Tuesday.
