Wnger: I am such a sore loser

Wenger is own worst critic when Arsenal fail

- by PAUL BROWN

ARSENE WENGER admits some Arsenal fans hate him – but not as much as he hates himself when his side don’t win.

The Gunners boss has faced pressure from supporters to walk away when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Fans have protested outside the Emirates and have stayed away from matches in recent weeks.

Wenger is likely to face more protests after Arsenal lost 2-0 at Tottenham to ensure they will finish below their rivals for the first time in 22 years.

But the Frenchman insists he does not take the criticism to heart with an FA Cup Final against Chelsea to come later this month. Wenger said: “I am ® like everybody. I prefer to be loved than hated but I can take a distance with that.

“I know it is not the person itself, it is the fact the manager does not win the games. They want to win and I can make a difference in that.

“I don’t take it too personally. I hate myself, the manager, more than anybody if I don’t win. I’m a very bad loser.”

Arsenal have not won the title since 2004 and failed to mount a serious challenge this season despite spending nearly £90m last summer. They also crashed out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the seventh year in a row after a 10-2 thrashing on aggregate by Bayern Munich.

But Wenger defended his record at Arsenal.

“People want to win,” he said. “If you don’t win the championship, the FA Cup, the Champions League, it is disastrous.

“But in the last three years, we won the FA Cup twice and finished second, third and fourth.

“We are in the FA Cup Final again.

“Overall, we are not happy because you want to win everything, but Real Madrid have not won the championship for five years.

“Liverpool haven’t won it for over 20. They are big clubs, it is difficult. Just because you turn up, it doesn’t mean you win.”
