Amir: Muslims must speak up to stop terror

- By JERRY LAWTON Chief Crime Correspondent

BRIT Muslim boxing hero Amir Khan said he was frightened for his family because terrorists were “twisting” his religion.

The former double world champion said growing wariness towards Muslims following atrocities committed by so-called Islamic extremists “scares” him.

He told Good Morning Britain: “I am Muslim and I never want to be looked at.

“If I’m on the bus or train I don’t want them pointing at me saying, ‘We don’t want to be on the train with you’.’’

Khan hails from Bolton – 11 miles from Manchester Arena where suicide bomber Salman Abedi killed 22 on Monday night.

And he said since having two-year-old daughter Lamaisah he more often noticed the racism unleashed after such attacks. “It’s getting worse and worse,’’ he said. “People will be pointing a finger at her and thinking, ‘You’re a Muslim’.’’ He said terrorists “give all Muslims a bad name”. But he went on: “In all different religions there is always good and bad. Killing innocent people is not in the Koran. We all should stick together.’’ Khan called on the Muslim community to report suspicions of extremism. “If you know information please go out there and report it,’’ he urged viewers. “This is totally against our religion. If these people are saying that they’re doing it because of Islam I do not believe that’s true. “They’re twisting Islam.’’
